Sintered friction material is bonded under heat and pressure rather than resin-glued, so it keeps its bite when a rotor is glazed with mud, sand or creek water and it does not fade at the bottom of a long downhill. On minis and small-bore bikes that matters even more, because a light machine with a small rotor has very little thermal mass to work with. Fresh pads give you a firm lever with a predictable initial bite, which is what lets a rider brake later into a corner and trail-brake without the front tucking. They also stop the rotor damage that comes from running a pad down to the backing plate. Bedding a new set in with progressively harder stops transfers material evenly to the rotor. Pad shapes differ between front and rear and across model years even within one family.
