Description
Gearing is one of the cheapest performance changes on a dirt bike, and it starts at the rear sprocket where a tooth or two can change how the whole bike feels off the bottom. ProTaper built its Race Spec (RS) rear sprockets around a CNC-machined Angled Mud Groove that channels debris away from the tooth roots as the wheel spins, instead of letting it pack in and wear a groove into the chain. This black 42-tooth rear sprocket is machined for Honda off-road models, and the groove layout also opens up roughly 40 percent more tooth surface area than a standard flat-plate design, so the chain rides on more material with every link that engages.
What makes this sprocket worth the swap:
- Angled Mud Groove design self-cleans during operation, shedding packed mud and dirt instead of trapping it against the chain
- CNC-machined tooth profile increases contact surface area versus flat competitor designs, which spreads load and slows wear
- Countersunk bolt holes self-center the sprocket onto the hub during installation, so no separate hub center guide tool is needed
- 42-tooth count for Honda off-road models, sold individually and ready to bolt on with stock hardware
- The black hardcoat finish keeps a clean, factory-style look on the bike and hides scuffs from chain slap better than bright colors do over a full season of riding.
Dropping to a 42T rear stretches out final gearing for more top-end pull, the kind of setup riders lean on for wide-open desert racing, GNCC transitions, or highway-adjacent dual-sport miles where you want less shift-happy RPM at speed. IPD Racing ships this part from stock, and if you are unsure whether this tooth count matches your riding style or your current gearing, our team can help you land on the right one before you order.
