Gear oil lives a different life to engine oil. There is no filter, no pressurised feed and no frequent change interval, so the fluid has to carry extreme pressure loads on its own for tens of thousands of miles. The API grade on the bottle is the key detail: GL4 fills suit manual gearboxes with yellow metals that aggressive additive packages can attack, while GL5 hypoid oils carry the sulphur-phosphorus chemistry final drives and differentials need where tooth contact is sliding rather than rolling. Viscosity does the rest, from a light 75W80 High Performance grade that reduces drag and improves cold shifting to 75W140 for heat-soaked, high-torque final drives. The Motorbike 75W90 and 75W140 fills cover shaft-drive bikes and gearboxes; fully synthetic hypoid options, including the LS version blended for limited-slip differentials, add shear stability under sustained load.
