Fork bushings are the sacrificial bearing surfaces between the tube and the slider, and they wear long before anything else in the fork does. Worn bushings show up as stiction off the top of the stroke, a knocking feel under hard braking, oil weeping past a seal that is being loaded sideways, and fork tubes that get scored if you keep riding on them. A fresh set of fork bushings restores the running clearance so the tube slides straight, the damping curve the valving was set up for actually happens, and the front wheel tracks bumps instead of skating over them. Anyone doing a seal and oil service should replace bushings at the same time, since the fork is already apart. Set both fork legs to the same clamp height so they stroke together.
